MY SKIN STORY: KALEIGH FASANELLA

– KEYS SOULCARE
Kaleigh Fasanella is a true trailblazer in the world of beauty writing. From the moment she fearlessly slid into the DMs of an editor during her college days, Kaleigh has been making waves in the industry. She’s freelanced like a boss, interned at major publications like Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, and Refinery29, and rocked the title of associate digital editor at Teen Vogue and Allure. While she’s one of the go-to’s for the latest mascara trends and skincare hacks, today, we’re delving into something deeper: Kaleigh’s incredible skin story. Her journey toward owning her power and embracing her unique beauty will inspire you. (She dropped some serious wisdom on us!) Kaleigh is getting real about how she found solace in her skincare ritual and mastered the art of makeup to enhance her natural beauty. POV: Your joyscroll has been activated.
LET’S DELVE INTO YOUR SKIN STORY: YOU LIVE WITH NETHERTON SYNDROME. WHAT HAS THAT BEEN LIKE, AND HOW HAS IT SHAPED YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR SKIN?
Living with Netherton syndrome, a rare genetic condition, has constantly made my skin present in my life. I’ve dealt with red, scaly skin, rashes, dryness, and itchiness from a young age. My twin sister and I share this condition, but we consider ourselves fortunate to have milder symptoms. However, it has still been a significant challenge that impacts my daily life. The condition was particularly tough during my teenage years, but even now, as I approach my thirties, it remains a source of stress, pain, and discomfort. However, I’ve learned to appreciate the good skin days and have built an incredible support system that helps me navigate the more challenging days.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TOWARDS ACCEPTING AND LOVING THE SKIN YOU’RE IN?
Loving the skin I’m in has been an ongoing process. There have been countless times when I wished to trade places with someone with “normal” skin. Even now, when my skin feels dry and irritated, it can be difficult not to feel ashamed. But I’ve realized the power of our thoughts and how they shape our perception of ourselves. I’ve learned to replace self-criticism with self-kindness and remind myself that my worth extends far beyond my skin. It’s an ongoing journey, and while I still have tough days, I’ve come a long way in accepting and embracing my skin.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OFFERINGS THAT LET YOU CELEBRATE YOUR UNIQUE BEAUTY?
Dryness and redness are my two primary skin concerns, so I always look for hydrating formulas that cover well without looking unnatural or cakey. It’s Like Skin does exactly that. I love how featherlight it feels and how seamless it is to apply with my hands. The 2-in-1 skin tint formula lets me go in with a light, all-over tint to even everything out. Then I’ll use it to spot conceal areas where I want more coverage — like around my nose and mouth. I have some fine lines in this area and around my eyes, but It’s Like Skin doesn’t settle into them at all, which I appreciate.
The first time I tried It’s Like Skin, I was definitely having an “insecure skin day.” After applying a light layer, I instantly felt more confident — not because it completely covered everything up, but because it made my skin look like mine, just healthier and happier. It’s not about hiding my “imperfections” but enhancing what I already have and feeling good in my skin. By focusing on self-care and finding ways to celebrate my unique beauty, I’ve cultivated a greater sense of confidence and self-acceptance.
HOW HAVE YOU NURTURED YOUR SOUL AND FOUND INNER PEACE ALONG THE WAY?
Nurturing my soul has been a crucial part of my journey. I’ve learned to be gentle with myself on days when I don’t feel powerful in my skin. Seeking out a support system of understanding individuals who remind me of my worth beyond my skin has made a tremendous difference. I’ve also found solace in connecting with others with similar experiences and sharing our stories. By prioritizing self-care, practicing self-compassion, and engaging in activities that bring me joy and peace, I’ve nourished my soul and found a sense of inner peace.
IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ON A SIMILAR PATH?
I want to encourage anyone facing similar challenges to remember they are not alone. It’s essential to reach out for support from loved ones, communities, or professional resources. Embracing your unique skin story and owning your power is a process, and it’s okay to have tough days. Be kind to yourself, surround yourself with positivity, and remember that your character and how you make people feel are what truly matter. You are more than your skin, and your journey toward self-acceptance is worth celebrating.
