With unwavering style, the Muslim influencer is redefining what true beauty means.
– KEYS SOULCARE
In a world where representation matters, Rayya Ansari is carving her path in the beauty space as a content creator. As a Black Muslim woman and makeup enthusiast, the Brooklyn native is taking a stance that honors modest fashion, a full beat, and a determination to inspire confidence that breaks down barriers. As one of the faces of It’s Like Skin 2-in-1 Concealer + Tint, Rayya is ready to open up about her journey, challenges, and the importance of embracing the skin you’re in.
WHEN IT COMES TO SELF-EMPOWERMENT, HOW DID CONTENT CREATION PLAY A ROLE?
Representation is crucial. As a Black Muslim woman, I rarely saw people who looked like me in ads or on the runway when I was growing up. It made me believe certain opportunities were not available to me. However, witnessing the rise of models like Halima Aden, who wore a hijab while walking the runway, gave me hope. It made me realize that there are opportunities for me too.
I want to break stereotypes and show we can excel in the beauty industry. There’s the struggle of not wanting to be seen as the token representative yet still desiring to be present to represent others. It’s a balancing act, but creating a path for future generations is essential.
WHY IS MODESTY IMPORTANT TO CREATING YOUR OWN BEAUTY STANDARD?
People often have preconceived notions about Muslim women and their capabilities. Being a Black Muslim woman in this industry presents challenges, but I strive to inspire others, regardless of their backgrounds. I want to show that modesty doesn’t have to be boring and doesn’t limit your choices; you can be stylish and cover your whole body. My purpose is to inspire other young women to do what makes them feel most confident and seen in their skin, whether through modest dressing or other avenues that resonate with them.
HOW HAVE YOU LEARNED TO OWN YOUR SKIN STORY OVER TIME?
Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to wear much makeup, which led me to appreciate my natural skin. I have a few scars on my face that I couldn’t conceal, but instead of feeling self-conscious, I learned to accept and embrace them. As I got older, I noticed more moles appearing on my face. Instead of viewing them negatively, I looked at the older women in my family and realized they were beautiful with their natural features.
HOW DOES MAKEUP SUPPORT YOUR SKIN CONFIDENCE?
Makeup became a form of self-expression and creativity for me. I learned makeup techniques from YouTube and loved experimenting and enhancing my features. It’s like therapy for me, and it gives me confidence.
However, I don’t use makeup to cover up my skin; I use it to enhance my existing beauty. I love offerings like It’s Like Skin 2-in-1 Concealer + Tint for that reason. I appreciate products that provide a natural look and feel. The concealer and tint combination served multiple purposes, allowing me to use it for spot coverage and as an all-over tint. Finding lightweight and seamless makeup is key to feeling confident and comfortable in my skin. Skincare is also essential from the inside out. When stressed, I prioritize self-care and prayer to maintain a healthy complexion.
WHO HAS BEEN YOUR BEAUTY INSPIRATION?
My mother has been a significant influence on my style. She is fashionable and makes her clothes, which inspired me. As I grew older, she started making my pants, and they gained attention on social media, helping me build a following. Seeing my mother’s confidence in her own style, where she always looks good, encouraged me to develop my fashion sense. Being one of the few Muslim girls, and often the only Black Muslim girl or hijabi, in my school, I needed to find ways to express my beauty and uniqueness. Dressing modestly became an opportunity for me to showcase my personal style and feel confident despite being different.
HOW DO YOU REPLENISH YOURSELF ON THOSE LOW-CONFIDENCE DAYS?
Like many people, I’ve had my share of insecurities. Imposter syndrome can creep in when navigating the beauty space, but I’ve learned to embrace my accomplishments and trust that I deserve the opportunities that come my way. However, I realized that dwelling on negativity wouldn’t help me move forward. I started practicing positive affirmations to counteract self-deprecating thoughts. I remind myself that I am beautiful and worthy. Confidence comes from within, and affirmations are crucial in shaping a positive self-image.
WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR EMBRACING THE SKIN YOU’RE IN?
People will inevitably talk and judge, regardless of what we do. Instead of worrying about others’ opinions, I focus on embracing my authenticity and confidently moving through the world. When I walk into a room as the only one, I remind myself that I belong there and that my presence matters. It’s essential to remember that our worth isn’t determined by external validation. People will always have something to say, so it’s best to stay true to ourselves and let our inner confidence shine.
