Our expert dermatologist serves up eye-opening insight on the best eye creams.

The debate on whether or not eye creams work is an ongoing argument. But, once you’ve started looking into what’s really going on with your skincare, it’s a topic worth exploring with a pro. Lucky for you, we’ve got one in-house! “Ask Dr. Renée” is back to help you come to your own conclusions — and make expert-informed picks the next time you hit the beauty aisle.
How do eye creams work?
There are two schools of thought. Some people think eye creams don’t provide anything additional to eyes, and that using just your regular moisturizer should suffice since they address the surface levels of skin.
But, many others acknowledge that the skin around our eyes is different. At 0.3 millimeters thick, it’s a lot thinner than the skin on, say, our cheeks or backs — which is about three millimeters thick. Our eye-area skin is more fragile and sensitive to things like moisture and dehydration, and eye creams address those factors.
What should we look for in them?
Ingredients make a big difference. Retinols are great around and under the eyes. (They can also irritate them, so look for really low-dose formulas or non-irritative alternatives, including a vitamin A-based cream.)
I personally like caffeine in my eye-area creams because I have a lot of dilated vessels that contribute to the darkness underneath the eyes. [That ingredient] helps close those vessels and give a brighter appearance.
And, finally, [look for] some antioxidant properties for protection from free radicals, environmental stressors, and irritants. Great plant-powered ingredients include rose hip seed oil (which nourishes and plumps skin’s fine, dry lines), organic jojoba oil (which balances skin, making it look and feel hydrated), and crambe seed oil (which conditions the skin and imparts a healthy glow).
I highly recommend our under eye cream due to the peptides and sunflower seed oil it’s packed with. It’s so good for a.m. and p.m. hydration and nourishment! It’s our best under eye cream for dark circles, and helps keep the under eye area smooth and moisturized. The Radiant Eye Cream has all the benefits your looking for in an eye cream- from helping soothe puffy eyes, to keeping the under-eye area bright and hydrated.
Also, Well People has a hydrating facial oil that can be used after morning cleansing, before sunscreen. The drops impart this dewy complexion and “supercharge” your moisturizer, makeup or SPF. You could follow up with the Well People’s tinted moisturizer SPF for full-on protection powered by shea butter, broccoli seed oil, and zinc oxide.
