Our dermatologist breaks down why getting sleep is a must for taking care of our skin.
– KEYS SOULCARE
We’re back with another installment of Ask Dr. Renée, our up-close-and-expert skincare series with Keys Soulcare’s very own consulting dermatologist and holistic skincare advocate, Dr. Renée Snyder.
From foggy brains and slower reflexes, to feeling more on edge than usual, getting a bad night’s sleep is never a recipe for a good time. But as it turns out, it’s not just our bodies that benefit from intentional, ritualized downtime — our skin does, too!
Here’s what Dr. Renée had to say about the sleep-skincare connection.
Why is getting a good night’s sleep essential for healthy skin?
I always tell my patients that the nighttime is the time for regeneration. It’s when our bodies and minds heal themselves and process what we’ve been through during the daytime, so that they can be re-energized for the next one.
Do bad sleep habits have a negative effect on our skin?
Sleep is essential to all of our wellbeing. But, specifically, if people sleep less than six hours a day on average, they make cortisol, which is a stress hormone that’s not good for skin. Not sleeping and dehydration — which often happens when we’re not taking great care of ourselves — can also lead to other things like sunken, darkened under-eye areas and a duller complexion overall.
When you’re refreshed in the morning, your skin looks better because it has had a chance to rest, too. (Not to mention nighttime products have had more time to work their magic.)
