YOU’RE A BEAUTY VETERAN WITH OVER 15 YEARS IN THE GAME. HOW DID YOUR MAKEUP JOURNEY BEGIN?
Makeup and beauty have always been a part of my life. Growing up, I was involved in the performing arts, and I’d always experiment with makeup, not just on myself but also on friends. My passion for beauty continued into high school, where I did makeup for performances, dances, and more. After high school, I initially wanted to pursue fashion design but enrolled in cosmetology school. There, I learned about hair and makeup, and I was fascinated by the transformative power of makeup.
HOW’D YOU LAND YOUR FIRST BIG GIG IN SUCH A COMPETITIVE INDUSTRY?
Fate temporarily led me to become an accounts payable professional, but I eventually interned at a creative agency in New York. Working with talented makeup artists and being exposed to the fashion industry further fueled my passion. I then became a full-time assistant to a makeup artist and had the opportunity to travel the world, working with brands like Burberry. Later, I crossed paths with Emily Weiss from Glossier, which marked a significant turning point in my career. Meeting inspiring women like Eva Chen and Katrina Lake further shaped my journey, ultimately leading me to create Pásame Beauty.
AS AN ARTIST, WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO MAKEUP WHEN WORKING WITH CLIENTS?
My approach is rooted in understanding the individual. I firmly believe that there’s beauty in everyone and every feature. When working with clients, I take the time to understand their lives and preferences. I aim to enhance their unique qualities and make them feel like their best version.
I don’t follow trends blindly; instead, I tailor my approach to the individual woman, considering her mood, goals, and what makes her feel confident. It’s like channeling the essence of who she wants to be. Fashion also plays a role in this, as I’ve learned that different styles can inspire different looks.
Ultimately, my goal is to help women embrace their natural beauty while providing them with the skills to enhance it when they choose. It’s about instilling confidence and self-expression, making women feel beautiful daily.
WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED IN YOUR OWN MAKEUP JOURNEY?
Early in my career, I faced challenges related to my own makeup choices. Coming from California with a love for bold makeup, I found myself in New York City surrounded by “naturally” beautiful women who embraced a more minimalistic approach. It led to a pivotal moment when a fellow makeup artist questioned my makeup choices, and while it stung at the time, it prompted me to reevaluate my approach.
I focused on improving my skincare and gradually embraced a more natural look. It made me comfortable with my bare skin and appreciate my natural beauty. This shift in perspective also influenced how I approach makeup for my clients.
ANY ADVICE FOR LIGHTWORKERS STRUGGLING TO STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN MAKEUP, CONFIDENCE, AND EMBRACING THEIR SKIN?
For anyone dealing with skin concerns while exploring their beauty, start by looking at your natural face in the mirror and getting comfortable with it. Understand that everyone has unique features, and these should be celebrated. Makeup should enhance your beauty, not mask it. And don’t hesitate to seek skincare advice from professionals to address specific concerns.
HOW HAS YOUR CHICANA HERITAGE AND PERSONAL BEAUTY STANDARDS INFLUENCED YOUR UPCOMING BRAND?
Pásame Beauty is a company born out of my desire to empower women through meaningful connections and beauty education. The name itself reflects the idea of taking the time to connect and bond over beauty, making it a pastime. It’s not just about the products; it’s about the experience.
My Hispanic heritage plays a significant role in the brand. I come from a culture where family and relationships are highly valued, and beauty is often passed down through generations. I want to carry forward this tradition of empowering women to feel beautiful and confident.
Beauty should be inclusive and diverse, reflecting the beauty of all women, regardless of their background or features. We want to challenge the rigid beauty standards that have existed for too long and create a space where everyone feels seen and valued.
WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONVEY TO WOMEN WHO CONNECT WITH YOUR BRAND?
In the future, I see Pásame expanding its product offerings while staying true to our mission of empowering women through beauty education and meaningful relationships. We’ll continue emphasizing the importance of embracing natural beauty while providing tools for self-expression when desired. Beauty is not one-size-fits-all, and you have the power to define your own beauty standards.
