PASSAGES: WE RETURN TO EACH OTHER IN WAVES
As this moving passage from poet Nayyirah Waheed proves, past relationships can be a gift.

“We
return to each
other
in waves.” — Nayyirah Waheed
When Nayyirah Waheed (a.k.a. author of salt and Nejma as well as Instagram’s most famous poet) speaks, we listen — and this powerful haiku washes over us with a universal, bittersweet honesty.
Waheed is the queen of introspection, from self-acceptance to harnessing the empathy to walk in someone else’s shoes. Here, she manages to articulate all-consuming feelings of love, loss, and perspective with 20/20 hindsight.
Lost love and relationships rarely play out on our terms. In their wake, it’s tempting to give in to cynicism and even ask ourselves, “What was the point?”
But Waheed reminds us that opening our hearts to love has a way of coming back to us — playing out as change within ourselves or in the subtle, but powerful, details of our daily lives. A lesson well worth coming back to, we’d say.
